More about Richard

Striving to be a Renaissance man, he hopes to become, as one of his most inspirational teachers phrased it, a "Jack of all trades and master of many."

Richard attended Oberlin College, and received a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Not one to let his schooling interfere with his education, he also has, in the tradition of the original M.I.T. hackers, a diploma from a Locksmithing & Electronic Security course.

He builds his own computers, web pages, rough wooden furniture, and is working on acquiring the full range of "Dad skills." He play games of many varieties, including card, role-playing, board, and mind, as well as a wide variety of puzzles. He reads—a lot—ranging from Science Fiction & Fantasy (Haldeman, Tepper, Tolkien and many others) to the classics (especially Dostoevsky, Homer, and Fitzgerald) as well as humor (Wodehouse, Adams, Pratchett) and philosophy and linguistics; his favorite form is the short story. He enjoys a good intellectual disagreement, deconstructing just about everything, discussing philosophy & religion (as long as people can keep the emotions under control), and has a little trouble shutting up once you let him start on a good ramble.

Everything is an appropriate subject for humor. Knowing when to censor oneself is a blend of etiquette and empathy. Not everyone shares his sense of humor, etiquette, or empathy.

Richard has a wonderful wife, Julie, and two terrific sons, Andrew (13) and Isaac (5).
