Group Lessons

Lessons for everybody

I currently teach group lessons for the general public through the non-profit group Austin Ballroom Dancers. Classes are held at the Hancock Recreation Center, run in 5-week sessions, and are very reasonably priced.

Workshops for December and the first part of January are now posted.

Classes are each one hour long and progressive in nature: the level one classes start from nothing, level two builds upon the techniques and figures learned in level one; three builds on two, etc.

I teach four classes: levels one (7:30-8:30) and two (8:45-9:45) are on Friday nights, and level three and a demand class (dances not on the normal list, technique classes, and level 4 and above) on Thursday nights.

By request, here's a list of steps that might be encountered in the first couple of levels.

See the ABD site for pricing and the current class schedule.

High Schools

I am currently teaching at McNeil High School in an after-school program sponsored by the PTSA.

Group lesson location

ABD classes are held at the Hancock Recreation Center, 811 E 41st Street.
This is the original Austin Country Club and is in the middle of the golf course just east of Red River between 38th and 41st. The entrance is on 41st Street, just west of the stop light at Red River.

Private Lessons

Getting a lesson

There are times available for private lessons. Afternoon times are available on Tuesdays and Thursday. Evening times are available on every other Monday, Tuesdays, and Wednesday, although some of these are only available while some student's standing is on hold for vacations and such. If you'd like a lesson at a time that is not currently available, you'll need to get on one or both of the waiting lists.

Waiting lists

If you need a time that is not currently available, you'll want to be placed on the cancellation fill list. When someone cancels, I start at the top of this list and start calling people. The first one I reach (or who reaches me), who wants the cancelled time gets the lesson. If there's a cancellation at a time when I can't reach the first several people on the list, even those further down the list have an opportunity to get a time.
To be placed on one of these lists, contact me or call me toll-free at (877) 5 cha-cha, being sure to include which list you would like to be on, your full name, and the method you'd like me to use to contact you (home phone, work phone, e-mail, all of the above). I'll confirm your addition to the list by e-mail.

Standing appointments

Standing appointments are regularly scheduled lessons to which the student is committing. Since life is not completely predictable, it is assumed that there will need to be a cancellation occassionally. Cancellation of a single lesson is subject to the cancellation policies below. If a student is cancelling a standing appointment with regularity, the standing appointment may be moved or cancelled by the instructor, since it is obviously no longer a good time for the student. For short-term adjustments, talk to the instructor about temporary suspension of the standing appointment. This way, if you go to Europe for the summer, your time can be rescheduled while you're gone, but it will be waiting for you when you return; likewise for acute medical conditions.

Before attending your first private lesson, be sure to review the new student information.
It's always good to check the fine print so you are aware of policies and expectations.

To the Garden Studio -- 1400 Foxtail Cove

Printer friendly version (it has the good map image on it, so it takes longer to load, but it prints legibly)

From MoPac: Take the exit for 2244/Rollingwood/Zilker Park (it's marked differently from different directions). If you're coming from the north, stay in the left lane and take the U-turn and then merge right--this becomes Barton Springs Road. Go through the park and turn right at the first light (just after the Barton Creek bridge). You'll be on Robert E. Lee Rd.

From the east side of town: Take I-35 to Riverside and go west. As you approach Auditorium Shores, turn left onto Barton Springs Rd. This will cross Lamar Blvd. and then a number of restaurants will be on the right. You'll turn left at the light after Chuy's. You'll be on Robert E. Lee Rd.

From Robert E. Lee: Follow Robert E. Lee until first right that isn't a parking lot; make that right turn onto Barton Hills Dr. Follow Barton Hills around the curve, up the hill, past some apartments, a small market, and some condos, until streets start appearing on the right again. The second one is Deerfoot Trail, and you want to turn right. It will curve and then the first right is Foxtail Cove. 1400 is straight in and a little left (it has a magnificent oak tree). Park on the cove or in the driveway (in the left half of the drive). The studio is around back on the right side of the house, along the little stone walk.

You can see my picture below, see the much clearer version of it, or use MapQuest's map instead.
